In Bristol, in 1885, 22 year old Sarah Ann Henley was so distraught at being jilted by her lover that she threw herself from the Avon suspension bridge.
Instead of falling to her death however her skirts kept her aloft, like a parachute, and she drifted gently down, eventually landing in the mud on the river bank. She eventually married and lived to the ripe old age of 84.
