Near Bristol, England, during the Lansdowne Hill cattle and sheep fair in 1839, a huge mob of drunks intent on destruction came swarming from the city, led by a redheaded and overweight woman known as Carroty Kate.
After attacking the drinking booths and beating the owners insensible they then smashed up most of the stalls and caused mayhem all night from 10pm until dawn the next day.
With help from the police, the showmen captured all the troublemakers and lashed the men together, tied them all one by one to a wagon wheel and thrashed them thoroughly.
Carroty Kate was then given a good caning.

In Bristol, England, in 1793, a large crowd of protestors made their way to Bristol bridge after a toll charge, which was to be abolished was re-imposed.
They ripped the gates off the bridge and burnt them on a bonfire. New gates were put back on shortly later but these too were ripped off and burnt.
Finally the Herefordshire militia read the riot act and during two days of rioting, muskets were fired, missiles were thrown and the militia made a bayonet charge.
In all 12 people were killed .

In Bristol, England, in October 1831, after the Great Reform Bill had been introduced, Sir Charles Wetherall openly opposed the bill and whilst he was opening the Assizes at the Mansion House, he was booed, hissed and pelted with stones and mud.
The protesting crowd then stormed Mansion House, partly wrecking it and devoured the banquet that had been laid on in honour of Sir Wetherall.
The next day the protestors again attacked, this time in the presence of soldiers and set fire to Mansion House and drank all the wine in the cellars.
The growing mob then went on the rampage attacking public buildings and wealthy residences and releasing prisoners from jail.
The day after this there were rumours that there would be more looters heading into the city from the countryside and more troops were called in.
Over 250 rioters were killed or seriously wounded before order was restored.
